Frame-Off Restoration Process Explained

A frame-off restoration is the highest level of classic car restoration. We explain what it involves, how much it costs and why it is worth it.

When we talk about a frame-off restoration, we mean the highest level of intervention on a classic car. The term literally means the body is separated from the chassis, giving access to every component for inspection, repair or replacement. It is the process we follow at Gredos Garage for concours-level restorations.

What Does a Frame-Off Restoration Involve?

The process entails total disassembly of the vehicle. Every bolt, gasket, wire and part is removed, catalogued and stored in labelled trays. This allows us to:

  • Inspect the chassis structure for hidden corrosion
  • Treat and protect areas inaccessible with the car assembled
  • Restore or replace each component individually
  • Guarantee a concours-quality result

Process Stages

A typical frame-off restoration follows these stages: complete strip-down and photographic documentation, independent chassis treatment and painting, bodywork restoration (panel beating, welding, filling, priming and painting), engine and transmission rebuild, full interior restoration and final assembly with precision adjustments.

How Long Does It Take?

Depending on the vehicle's condition and complexity, a frame-off restoration requires between 1,500 and 3,000 hours of labour. In calendar terms this translates to 12 to 24 months. At Gredos Garage we keep owners informed with regular photographic updates.

Is the Investment Worth It?

Absolutely. A frame-off restored classic car can multiply its value between three and ten times compared to an unrestored example. Furthermore, it becomes eligible for the world's most prestigious concours d'elegance events and delivers a driving experience virtually identical to a factory-fresh car of its era.

Frame-Off vs. Frame-On

The more affordable alternative is a frame-on restoration, where the body remains on the chassis. It is suitable for cars in generally good condition that need partial cosmetic and mechanical improvements. However, it will never achieve the same finish level or longevity guarantee as a frame-off. At Gredos Garage we advise each client on the most appropriate restoration level for their vehicle and budget.
