The electrical system is probably the most undervalued and troublesome system in any classic car. Dried-out cables, oxidised connectors and obsolete components cause intermittent faults that can ruin the driving experience. At Gredos Garage we have developed a comprehensive protocol for restoring these systems.
Electrical System Diagnosis
Before dismantling anything we carry out a full diagnostic. We measure resistance across every circuit, check voltage drops at critical points and verify the condition of cable insulation. Many electrical problems in classics stem from poor earths (ground connections), so we pay special attention to every grounding point.
Wiring Loom: Repair or Replace?
If the original loom has brittle wires or melted insulation, the safest option is a complete replacement. We manufacture bespoke looms replicating the original cable routing, using correctly rated cable with modern heat-resistant insulation. We retain period connectors or use faithful replicas to preserve visual authenticity.
Alternator and Charging System
Many classics are fitted with dynamos that provide insufficient charge. When the owner agrees, we install visually discreet alternator conversions that are electronically superior. This improves starting reliability and allows modern accessories such as a hidden sat-nav to be powered.
Electronic Ignition
Points-based ignition is another common source of trouble. We offer externally invisible electronic ignition conversions such as Pertronix or 123ignition systems. These upgrades are fully reversible and dramatically improve starting, idle smoothness and fuel consumption.
Lighting and Indicators
We restore original headlamps and tail lights, polishing reflectors and replacing lenses when necessary. We also offer discreet LED conversions that maintain the original appearance but provide greater road safety.
