Few vehicles can claim to have been used on all five continents, by armies, explorers, farmers and royalty alike. The Land Rover Defender is one of them. Its story, spanning more than seven decades, is that of a utility vehicle that became a legend.
Origins: Inspired by the Jeep
In 1947, Maurice Wilks, Rover's chief engineer, sketched the first outlines on a Welsh beach. Inspired by the American Jeep he used on his estate, he conceived a British utility vehicle with four-wheel drive and an aluminium body (a material abundant after the war, unlike steel). The first Land Rover Series I was presented at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show.
Series I, II and III (1948–1985)
The first three generations established Land Rover's reputation for indestructibility. The Series I with its 1.6-litre petrol engine was spartan but capable. The Series II (1958) introduced more rounded lines and diesel engines. The Series III (1971) remained in production until 1985, accumulating millions of units sold worldwide.
Defender 90/110/130 (1983–2016)
The "Defender" name arrived in 1990, but the 90/110 model had launched in 1983. With coil-spring suspension, a turbodiesel engine and a slightly more civilised interior, it became the definitive off-roader. The 2.5-litre Td5 and later the Ford Duratorq 2.4 were the most popular powerplants.
Military Use and Expeditions
The Defender has served in more than 100 armies. It has crossed the Sahara, the Amazon rainforest and Antarctica. The Camel Trophy expeditions turned it into a symbol of adventure. Its genuine off-road ability — generous approach and departure angles, low crawl ratio — remains the benchmark.
A Rising Classic
Since original Defender production ended in 2016, prices have risen steadily. A well-restored Defender 90 can easily exceed €50,000. At Gredos Garage, the Defender is one of our favourite models — practical, charismatic and perfect for enjoying the trails of the Sierra de Gredos.
